Albuquerque

_68X0747.jpgIn 1997, NDI-NM expanded its programs to Albuquerque, subsequently establishing in-school classes at 17 elementary schools, the majority of which serve the metropolitan area’s South Valley and Southeast Heights, where the need for educational enrichment programs is particularly high.

In 2001, NDI-NM added Saturday classes for motivated children who auditioned and were invited to join our Super Wonderful Advanced Team (SWAT) for 4th- through 6th-graders and Celebration Team for 6th- through 9th-grade students. Most recently, we added a pre-professional dance and performing arts training program, Xcel Team, for high school students.

The Albuquerque Roving Ambassadors are a select group of Advanced Training dancers. They are messengers for NDI-NM, making appearances throughout Albuquerque and New Mexico. Their performances help to keep the work of NDI-NM in the public eye, promote awareness of our organization and contribute to our growing identity in Albuquerque. The Roving Ambassadors are held to the highest standards of excellence, are knowledgeable about NDI-NM’s programs and mission statement and demonstrate the positive impact that NDI-NM can have on a child. Since their debut in August 2008, the Roving Ambassadors have made dozens of appearances.

Today, NDI-NM serves 1,380 children throughout the greater Albuquerque metropolitan area. Our In-School Program provides joyful high energy learning experiences for 1,287 children and 66 classroom teachers in 17 elementary schools in either 15- or 30-week formats. We have 20 schools on our waiting list. NDI-NM also serves 214 children in grades 3 – 12 with after-school and advanced training classes.

Due to the increasing demand for NDI-NM’s programs and a lack of low-cost after-school programming in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County granted NDI-NM a 60-year lease for the historic Hiland Theater. Renovation, which will include studios, office space and a fully-equipped, 600-seat performing arts theater, has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.

Once renovated, The Hiland will become a vibrant inviting space for children and families. The modernized facility will be home base for NDI-NM’s Albuquerque programs and will exponentially expand our capacity in Albuquerque. With this facility, NDI-NM will broaden the scope of its programming to include the expansion of programs and a top-quality after-school program. When fully operational, 3,300 children and teachers and over 20,000 local audience members will be touched annually by NDI-NM’s performing arts, character-building and healthy lifestyle programs.
