NDI New Mexico and REEL FATHERS have teamed up to bring acclaimed filmmaker Lisette Marie Flanary to Albuquerque for an evening celebrating Hawaiian culture and featuring a special screening of her award-winning documentary, Nā Kamalei: The Men of Hula.
Ready for a break from the cold? Join us as we bring a taste of Hawai’i to Albuquerque for an evening of fun, food and film on January 23rd, 2016. Hawaiian filmmaker and Hula dancer Lisette Marie Flanary will host a screening of her thought-provoking documentary, Nā Kamalei: The Men of Hula, which portrays the ancient roots of Hula as a warrior dance for men. The fun begins with a free Hula dance class from 4:30-5:30 for parents and their kids. From 6:00 to 7:00, enjoy the tasty food of Kimo’s Hawaiian BBQ and meet the filmmaker at a VIP reception. At 7:00, Nā Kamalei: The Men of Hula will be shown followed by a panel discussion featuring Lisette Marie Flanary and culturally diverse local community leaders that explores different cultural norms for masculinity and fatherhood.
